Lowndes County Mississippi is located in east central Mississippi. We are bordered by the Alabama state line on the east. The county has five volunteer fire protection districts that cover about 517 square miles and an estimated 60,000 persons including the city of Columbus which is protected by a paid Columbus Fire Department.
The District #3 Volunteer Fire Department consists of 37 volunteer fire fighters. We operate out of five stations spread around the district. Our fire district covers approximately 90 square miles and about 12,000 people. We have opened our fifth station in 1999 so that we now have equipment within 5 miles of most residences or businesses. The new station was constructed in the southeastern portion of our fire district. We have a Mississippi Insurance board rating of 8.
District #3 personnel are notified of emergencies by voice pagers. We are dispatched by the unified Lowndes County 911 communication center.
We have twenty four fire fighters who also volunteer their time as emergency medical first responders (First Responders level though EMT-P (4)). We have placed two AED units in service.
Baptist Memorial Hospital Ambulance provides the ambulance service out of our main District #3 Fire Station to reduce the response time to emergencies in our Fire District.
District #3 Volunteer Fire Department uses both Hurst and Amkus brand spreaders, cutters and rams. We have one set of Hurst air bags .
The District #3 Board of Directors voted in January 2002 to purchase a new pumper for the Department to replace the reserve engine RESERVE engine that had been placed into service for the new station on Highway 69 South. The Department will request the County Board of Supervisors to approve the purchase from the Department's County Funds. Delivery could be as early as February 2002.
District #3 is working with the rating board to improve the fire insurance rating for the area that will be protected by the addition of a new pumper to our fleet!
