District #2 is located in the northwest corner of Lowndes County. The department covers approximately 72 square miles. The department is bordered by Lowndes County District #1 on the east, the department is bordered by the city of Columbus on the south and the Monroe and Clay counties on the north and west. The department protects a population base of 12,000 persons and it is growing.
District #2 currently has 27 active volunteers. The department also runs medical first responders to assist the ambulance crews on motor vehicle accidents and life threatening conditions. The department has 4 RN's and 3 EMT-P's who respond as first responders. All members are required to obtain emergency medical responder certification and Mississippi Certified Volunteer Firefighters.
District #2 has three stations with the primary station located in Jess Lyons Road off of Highway 45 North. The Columbus Air Force Base is located in the District #2 fire protection district. The CAFB maintains their own fire protection for the base with full ARFF and Structural Fire Brigade, and a Hazmat Team.
The Department has three Class 1 engines, two rescue trucks, two tankers with a third being fabricated and a medical response van. The Fire Protection area is rated as a Class 8 and 9 by the Mississippi Rating Bureau.
District #2 recently donated a set of the Jaws of Life to the District #4 Volunteer Fire Department.
